Responsibilities

As a penetration tester, you take on an offensive role by carrying out attacks on a company’s IT systems. Using various hacking tools, you will attempt to uncover and document security vulnerabilities. Finally, you will inform the company about the vulnerabilities found and propose possible solutions to make the company more secure.

Activities

Activities of a penetration tester can be,

  • Testing web application, cloud application or entire networks.
  • Learning and developing new attack techniques
  • And automating attacks

Skills needed

To become a penetration tester you should be familiar with

  • Networks and operating systems
  • You should also be able to program
  • Be familiar with penetration testing methodologies, such as the Cyber Kill Chain
  • And be creative, as well as keep your skills always up-to-date

Career

As a penetration tester you can either work in-house, for a consulting company or as a freelancer.

As a Penetration Tester you will earn on average $115,078 per year and have great job prospects, as the demand for Penetration Testers is expected to increase by 33% until 2030.
